Linkedin : Setting up my writing routine

I’ve decided to write two posts/articles per week on linkedin. Following recommandations, I will post on Tuesday and Thursdays.

I’ve been wanting to setup a routine for years. I tried and failed many times.

Reassess my motivation

More recently, I have reviewed my reasons for posting. Well, I have reviewed my goals in life and this impacted the reasons for posting. Before, I used to think that I needed to post only for the benefit of my company and to help generate more revenue to my company. That’s basically what the « employee advocacy » programs try to achieve.

I wanted to be an advocate, but I was no marketer. I wanted to share my thoughts on leadership, but

The thing is, I felt a gap between my own views and my corporate views; and was afraid someone could tell me I did or said something wrong. So instead of risking potential failure, I was doing nothing at all.

So I’m starting to post with a new mindset, and I can already feel the change happening.

What is blocking me?

First action I took was to contact the social media advisor in my company, sharing my barriers and asking for advice. Here are his answers to my questions :

  • Can I answer, repost or interact with former colleagues who are now part of the competition but still have very interesting point of views?

Answer: Yes, as long as you keep to the facts and avoid inflammatory comments.

  • Will my POV be interesting? There’s so many articles on the same subjects.

Answer: I would say this comes with practice and that the frequency of your posts are more important – that shows you are a thought leader.

  • One of my barriers is always in which language should I write? my audience is composed of international and French contacts.

Answer: I think you can write in both French and English. We see our board members, for example, posting in both German and English.

  • When we say personal content, how personal can it be, should it always be with the objective to serve the company. For instance, I’m a huge fan of virtual reality which I practice every day. Facebook has just launch VR workplace which is amazing. Can I talk about that?

Answer: As long as you don’t specifically call our competing with the company’s vision… I think it’s okay to talk about other topics. For example, Sarah posts frequently about her family and dog. So, posting about VR is fine.

Make it worth the effort

  • How can I make my articles visible on linkedin?

Answer: Hashtags, posting on multiple social channels, using images and videos, avoid posting on Fridays, weekends, holidays

  • How can I share the content of my colleagues when linkedin algorithm doesn’t even suggest their articles to me?

Answer: That is a great question and I am not sure what the answer is. Perhaps change to following instead of connecting and see what that does?

My progress so far

I have posted two things already, a post and an article.

  • TUESDAY 19pm – The post resonated very well on linkedin. It contained a sketchnote, as well as mentioned 3 people. (1487 views, 44 likes, 12 comments). The post was a sketch note I did about a podcast. Was contacted by the host of the podcast who asked if I could do sketch notes for the upcoming podcasts.
  • TUESDAY 11am – The article had less views on linkedin (28 view, 17 likes, 3 comments). The article was marketing one of my company events. I also added some home made visuals. Two people contacted me with private message to know more about sketching.

Tomorrow I will post another post!
